If Goldilocks wore hats...

... she would have this problem.

I have made several hats for my daughter.  She's a winter baby, and that breed requires many knit things for warmth.

I have made ribbed hats, and cabled hats, and silly hats, and fancy hats.  What I haven't made is a single hat that fits her head.

First we have the ribbed hat.  It's a simple 1x1 rib in a bright, happy magenta and teal.  It's soft, it's durable, and it's warm.  It's also too wide.

Then we have the cabled hat.  This one I envisioned being the hospital hat, the adorable and impressive knit cap she'd wear just after being born, rather than the generic one the hospital gives you.  I chose a lovely pattern in a soft color.  Perfect.  Except it's too short for the conehead of a newborn baby.

Next up is the silly hat.  It's a tri-peak hat, and it's usually my standard.  It's cute, it's warm, and it's just the right amount of silly to put on a tiny human who can't voice their opinion on whether or not they want to look silly.  This one is too big all around.

This brings us to the attempt at a fancy hat.  First I made the teal hat.  I love the delicate, scalloped edge of this one.  I do not love that it's too wide.  So I made another one.  The red hat is the same yarn, on the same needles.  It's one size smaller, according to the pattern.  It's several sizes smaller according to my daughter's head, as this one is too short.

This brings us to a whopping FIVE hats made, and ZERO hats wearable.  Utter madness.  Something had to be done.  I scoured patterns, I took meticulous measurements, and I came up with my last attempt.  This would be the one.  I could feel it.

It's a little bit pointy at the top, which means it's a little bit too long.  But it's perfect in every other dimension, so we're just calling it room to grow.

And she seems to like it.
